Connecticut · Fairfield County Driven in daily

Three roads run this coast. One of them will not take a van.

Greenwich to Fairfield, driven by chauffeurs who know which of the three parallel roads a given vehicle is actually allowed on. The fare is fixed before you confirm, and the state line adds nothing to it. It is simply more miles on the route.

  • No state-line surcharge, only the miles

At a glance

The short version, before the detail.

Coverage
Lower Fairfield County: Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Rowayton, Westport and Fairfield.
Ways to book
Point to point, by the hour, and airport transfers to HPN, LaGuardia, JFK, Newark Liberty and Sikorsky Memorial. Groups of up to fourteen in one vehicle.
Hourly minimum
Four hours, up to sixteen in one booking, with the chauffeur waiting between stops.
Wait time
15 minutes at a kerbside pickup. 60 minutes on an airport arrival, from the moment you land.
Availability
Every day, including holidays. Book at least 24 hours ahead where you can.
If plans change
Full refund 24 hours or more before pickup. Half back between 12 and 24 hours. Nothing inside 12.
The Merritt Parkway
Closed to commercial vehicles, and low under its stone arches. Anything larger than an SUV runs on I-95 or the Boston Post Road instead, and we work that out when we quote rather than at the ramp.
The state line
Adds no surcharge. A Connecticut journey is priced on the route like any other, and Connecticut has no tolls of its own. Every toll on the quote is on the New York side of it.
Where the car comes from
We are a New York and New Jersey company that drives into Fairfield County daily. There is no Connecticut office, so an early morning here is worth a little more notice than an early morning in Manhattan.

I-95 · Route 15 · US 1

Three roads, and the one your vehicle can use

Three roads run this coast the same way, a mile or two apart, and they are not interchangeable. One of them will not carry a commercial vehicle at all, which is why we settle the road at the quote rather than at the ramp.

RT 15

The Merritt Parkway

No commercial vehicles

A 1930s parkway running inland from the New York line at Greenwich, where the Hutchinson becomes it. Closed to commercial vehicles, low under its stone arches and short on its slip roads, so the rule is simple: a car may use it and anything bigger may not. When I-95 stops it is the road everybody else has just thought of.

I-95

I-95

The shoreline road, and the slow one

The Connecticut Turnpike, along the water through Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, Norwalk, Westport and Fairfield, and the only road here that takes every kind of vehicle. It is also the road that fails first: between Greenwich and Bridgeport the afternoon peak can add half an hour to twenty minutes of driving.

US 1

The Boston Post Road

Every town centre, every light

US 1 is Putnam Avenue through Greenwich, and the main street of nearly every town after it. Signalled the whole way and never quick, but it reaches the front doors the motorway only passes, and it is the road a van takes between two towns when the Merritt is out. Short hops along the coast usually belong on it.

A sedan or an SUV
Any of the three. We choose on the hour and the address, and tell you which before you travel rather than after.
A Sprinter van or a bus
Not the Merritt. Commercial vehicles are barred from it and the arches are low besides, so anything larger than an SUV runs on I-95 or the Post Road. The quote is worked out on that route, so the time you are given already allows for it.
A pickup inland
New Canaan, Wilton and the back country are nowhere near I-95, and the natural road to them is the Merritt, the one a van cannot use. An inland pickup in a large vehicle is a longer drive than the map makes it look, and we say so when we quote it.

I-95 between Greenwich and Bridgeport is among the slowest stretches of road in the north-east at the afternoon peak, and the Merritt does not always rescue it. When I-95 stops, the parkway fills with the cars that left it.

Connecticut has no tolls of its own. Every toll on a Connecticut quote sits on the New York side of the journey, either a Bronx crossing or a bridge to New Jersey, and each is passed through at cost.

New York · Connecticut

What the border changes, and what it does not

The line crosses I-95 at Byram, the parkway at the top of Greenwich and the Post Road at Port Chester. A car notices none of the three, and neither should the fare.

Nothing here changes

How the fare is worked out
One fixed quote for the route, confirmed before you book. Greenwich is further from Manhattan than Rye is, and that is the whole of the difference.
The wait time
Fifteen minutes at a kerbside pickup, sixty on an airport arrival from the moment you land. The same in Stamford as in Brooklyn.
The cancellation ladder
Full refund 24 hours or more before pickup, half between 12 and 24, nothing inside 12. One ladder, both states.
The chauffeur and the car
Licensed, insured, vetted and dispatched by us. Nothing about that is different on this side of the line.

These genuinely do

Where the car comes from
We are a New York and New Jersey company driving into Fairfield County, not a Connecticut office pretending otherwise. Give us a little more notice for a 5 a.m. pickup in Westport than you would for one in Midtown.
Which airport is nearest
From Greenwich or Stamford, Westchester County Airport is usually the shortest run of the lot and JFK the longest. That is worth knowing before the ticket is booked rather than after.
Where the tolls are
Connecticut has none. Every toll on the quote is on the New York side, either a Bronx crossing or a bridge across to New Jersey, and each is passed through at cost.
How an airport run is quoted
For the route and the vehicle, confirmed before you book. That is the honest way to handle a drive that is mostly motorway.

The only thing a state line genuinely changes is distance, and distance is already in the quote. If a fare goes up at the border, ask what the border itself is charging for.

The coast, and where a car can wait

Not what is inside these places, but what each one does to a car. Which entrance, which side street, and which of them empties all at once.

Greenwich Avenue

Greenwich · the hill down to the station

A steep street with angled parking on both sides and people crossing it the whole length, which leaves nowhere for a car to hold. We take a side street off it, such as Elm, Lewis or Havemeyer, or the bottom of the hill by the station.
The eastern villages

Cos Cob, Riverside, Old Greenwich

Three small New Haven Line stations a few minutes apart, each on a short approach road with a car park that is full by eight. Name the station rather than the town and the chauffeur is at the right one instead of the famous one.
Stamford Transportation Center

Stamford · South State Street

The busiest station in the state, with Amtrak calling as well as Metro-North, which is why this kerb has suitcases on it rather than briefcases. Long-running building work keeps moving where a car may stand, so we confirm the side on the day rather than the week before.
Downtown Stamford

Tresser and Washington Boulevards

Towers whose front doors are on one-way streets with no standing, and several of them emptying inside the same twenty minutes at six. A named cross street beats a building number here every time.
Harbor Point

Stamford · south of the tracks

Waterfront blocks on a peninsula reached under the railway, with effectively one way in and the same way out. An event down there leaves through a single junction, so we agree the meeting point before you go in.
New Canaan

Elm Street, and the branch line

Inland and nowhere near I-95, so the road is the Merritt, which decides the vehicle before anything else does. The branch from Stamford thins out at weekends, and that is usually when the car is booked instead of the train.
Darien

Route 1 through the centre

The Post Road runs straight through the middle with a set of lights at every junction, and the two stations sit either side of it. A drop at Noroton Heights and a drop at Darien are not the same drop, and ten minutes apart at the wrong hour.
Rowayton and South Norwalk

Norwalk · the water and the SoNo streets

Rowayton is narrow lanes with almost nowhere to turn anything large, so a van is met at the top rather than at the door. In SoNo the restaurants empty onto the same street at once. A pickup a block off it moves, one on it does not.
Westport and the Saugatuck bridge

Westport · Railroad Place, Saugatuck

The station is not in the town centre; it is across the river in Saugatuck, beside an old swing bridge that is narrow and opens for boats. A car caught on the wrong side of it is simply stopped, so we allow for that instead of promising around it.
Fairfield

The Post Road and two campuses

Two universities in one town, which puts the whole Post Road at a standstill on move-in and graduation weekends. Three stations as well: Fairfield, Fairfield Metro and Southport, so tell us which platform rather than which town.

Five airports, and the nearest is not one of the big three

Give us the flight number and the pickup follows the aircraft. Every arrival includes 60 minutes of wait time, and the fare is quoted for the route.

HPN

Westchester County

The nearest airport to most of this page by a wide margin: its entrance is off King Street, which is the state line itself. Worth checking before the ticket is booked rather than after.

15-45 min

LGA

LaGuardia

The shortest of the three New York airports from here, down I-95 and over the Throgs Neck or the Whitestone. Both crossings are tolled and the toll goes on the quote at cost.

45-90 min

JFK

John F. Kennedy International

The longest of the three, and the one most exposed to whatever I-95 is doing through Stamford. Give us the flight number and the pickup is worked back from the aircraft.

55-110 min

EWR

Newark Liberty International

Across the top of the city and over the George Washington, or straight down through Manhattan. Tolled whichever way we go, and the tolls are passed through at cost.

60-120 min

BDR

Sikorsky Memorial

General aviation, and in Stratford rather than in Bridgeport despite the name. Short from the eastern end of the county and a long way from Greenwich.

15-55 min

Drive times are typical, not guaranteed. Traffic, weather and roadworks all move them, which is why we watch the flight instead of the clock.

Ways to book in Connecticut

Three formats cover everything we do here, and every one is quoted before you confirm.

Point to point

A station drop in Greenwich, dinner in SoNo, a house in New Canaan to an office on Tresser Boulevard.

One fixed quote for the route, confirmed before you book.

By the hour

A morning of buildings in downtown Stamford, or an evening where the car waits rather than being re-booked at every stop.

Blocks of four to sixteen hours, with the car staying and waiting included.

Airport transfer

HPN, LaGuardia, JFK, Newark Liberty or Sikorsky Memorial, with the flight watched and 60 minutes of wait time on every arrival.

Quoted per vehicle for the airport and the address, with the flight watched.

What we control, and what we do not

A car service that promises to beat traffic is a car service that will be late and surprised about it.

We control the car and the chauffeur

Vetted, licensed, insured and dispatched to be early, and driven in from our side of the line with that drive already in the plan.

We do not control I-95

Between Greenwich and Bridgeport it is one of the slowest stretches in the north-east at peak, and a single incident closes it with the Merritt as the only way round. We plan for the top of the range and tell you while it is happening.

We do not control the Merritt

It is closed to commercial vehicles and low under its arches, so the road your car takes is decided by the vehicle as much as by the traffic. We work that out at the quote, not at the ramp.

We control what you are charged

The fare is worked out before you confirm and does not move for the weather, the hour or the state line. Tolls, parking and the congestion charge are passed through at cost.

The car, and the road it can use

Seats and cases choose the vehicle here, and the vehicle then chooses the road. Anything larger than an SUV is off the Merritt before we have left the yard.
