Staten Island · Richmond County

Every way off the island is a bridge.

St George down to Tottenville, with the crossing chosen for the hour you are travelling and its toll shown before you confirm. Newark Liberty is the short run from most of the borough, whatever the map makes you assume.

  • Four bridges off the island, all tolled
  • Newark often closer than JFK
  • Tolls passed through at cost
  • 24/7, holidays included

Tolls on a crossing
Every bridge off the island is tolled. The three into New Jersey charge in one direction only, coming back into New York, and the Verrazzano charges in both. Whichever applies is shown on the quote at cost.
Congestion charge
Staten Island is outside the zone. A journey ending on a local street at or below 60th Street in Manhattan enters it, and the charge is quoted with the fare.

Off the island

Four bridges, and no fifth option

Nothing leaves this borough on a road that does not cross water. One bridge goes east into Brooklyn and three go west into New Jersey, all four are tolled, and the wrong one is the difference between a quiet run and an hour on a ramp.

  1. East · to Brooklyn

    Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

Tolled both ways · lands in Bay Ridge

The only crossing that stays inside New York, and the road to Brooklyn, Manhattan, JFK and LaGuardia. It is also the borough's entire eastern exit, so anything that closes it has no local alternative. The detour is through New Jersey. A toll is charged in each direction and passed through at cost.

  2. West · to Elizabeth, NJ

    Goethals Bridge

Tolled into New York · free going out

The North Shore's way into New Jersey, carrying the Staten Island Expressway straight onto the Turnpike. Recently rebuilt and wider than the span it replaced, so it holds up better at peak. This is the Newark Liberty road, and the reason that airport is the short run from most of the island.

  3. South-west · to Perth Amboy, NJ

    Outerbridge Crossing

Tolled into New York · free going out

The southernmost crossing, off the tip of the island at Tottenville. From the South Shore it beats driving north to the Goethals, and it is the sensible start of anything heading for Philadelphia or the Jersey Shore. Named after a man rather than a position. It is not the outer bridge.

  4. North-west · to Bayonne, NJ

    Bayonne Bridge

Tolled into New York · free going out

The steel arch over the Kill Van Kull from Port Richmond, its roadway raised so container ships can pass underneath it. The quickest way to Bayonne, Jersey City and the Holland Tunnel approaches, and a useful escape when the Goethals is stacked.

A tolled crossing is not a choice here; there is no untolled road to take instead. What we can do is take the right one, and pass the toll through at exactly what the authority charges, shown on the quote before you confirm.

On marathon Sunday in November the Verrazzano closes for most of the day and the start village takes the streets around Fort Wadsworth from before dawn. With the bridge shut, the only drive to Brooklyn is the long way through New Jersey.

St George to Whitehall

The ferry is free, and it will not take your car

The best-known thing about the borough and the least useful fact about driving in it. Worth setting out exactly what the boat does and what it cannot do, because people plan a journey around it and discover the difference at the terminal.

What the boat does

  • Free, and running at every hour

No fare in either direction, every day of the year, through the night as well as the peak. The crossing itself runs 25 to 30 minutes on the water, with boats more frequent at commuting hours and thinner overnight.

  • Lands at the bottom of Manhattan

Whitehall Terminal sits at the southern tip of the island, inside the South Ferry and Whitehall Street subway stations and a short walk into the Financial District. For one person with a briefcase it is genuinely a good way to travel.

  • A car can meet either end of it

We collect and drop at St George all day, and in Lower Manhattan just the same. If you are crossing on foot, say which direction and the car waits on the correct side of the harbour rather than the wrong one.

What it cannot do

  • It has carried no cars since 2001

The vehicle decks closed after September 11th and the prohibition was written into federal maritime rules the year after. There is no queue to join and no fee that would change it: a private car simply cannot board, in either direction.

  • A hired car cannot collect at the door

City rules let a car service drop at the terminal's Kiss and Ride, reached up the bus ramp off Richmond Terrace, but send pickups down to Richmond Terrace itself. We name the exact spot when we confirm.

  • It does not solve an airport run

Crossing on foot with cases and then finding a car in Manhattan is two journeys and a queue, and it is slower than the bridge almost every time. With bags and a flight, we drive it and price the whole thing as one route.

Boat one way and a car the other is a booking we take often and it works perfectly well. It just has to be said out loud when you book, so the car is held on the right shore.

Between the bridges

Two expressways and a boulevard

Once you are on the island, three roads carry almost everything. There is very little redundancy in that, and it is the honest reason every time on this page is a range rather than a number.

  • I-278

    Staten Island Expressway

    Goethals to the Verrazzano

The only continuous road across the island, and the one nearly every journey ends up on. Nothing parallel carries the same traffic, so when it stops the alternative is a crawl of local streets through Grasmere and Dongan Hills. We set the pickup against the hour it will actually be.

  • NY 440

    West Shore Expressway

    Outerbridge up to the Goethals

The western spine, running past Freshkills Park with very little built along it. Usually the quiet way between the South Shore and the North Shore, and the road we take when the Expressway is not worth the argument.

  • LOCAL

    Hylan Boulevard

    Rosebank down to Tottenville

Fourteen miles of local road down the East and South Shores, and the address of a great many of the island's houses and shopfronts. Lights the whole way, buses stopping in lane and no shoulder to wait on, so we ask for a cross street rather than a house number.

The Korean War Veterans Parkway is a parkway in the literal sense: commercial vehicles are restricted on it, so a Sprinter or a bus goes round by Arthur Kill Road or the West Shore. The chauffeur knows which. You do not have to.

Staten Island, from the kerb

Not what is inside these places. Which gate is still open in the evening, which kerb a hired car is allowed to use, and which of two campuses with the same name you actually meant.

  • St George Ferry Terminal

1 Bay Street, at Richmond Terrace

The Kiss and Ride is up the bus ramp off Richmond Terrace, and city rules send a hired car's pickup back down to Richmond Terrace itself. We name the spot when we confirm rather than leave the chauffeur circling the block.

  • Empire Outlets and the ballpark

    St George, beside the terminal

Both sit on the same few streets as the ferry, so a boat and a final whistle empty into the same kerbs at the same moment. After a game we set the pickup a block inland and you are moving while the ramp is still full.

  • Snug Harbor Cultural Center

    1000 Richmond Terrace, Livingston

Eighty-three acres behind a cast-iron fence with several gates, and most of them lock in the early evening. The West Gate on Snug Harbor Road is the one that stays open late. For an evening wedding that single fact decides where the cars go.

  • Staten Island Mall

    2655 Richmond Avenue, New Springville

A ring road around the whole building, entrances off Richmond Avenue and Marsh Avenue, and Richmond Avenue busy most of the day either side of it. Name the anchor store and the car is at that door, not at the far corner of the lot.

  • Staten Island University Hospital

Two campuses, and not near each other

Ocean Breeze on Seaview Avenue and Prince's Bay on Seguine Avenue carry the same name and sit most of the island apart. Say north or south when you book and the chauffeur is at the right entrance the first time.

  • Fort Wadsworth

Bay Street, under the bridge tower

A national park site at the foot of the Verrazzano, and the marathon start village on race Sunday in November. On that morning the streets around it shut before dawn, which makes it a booking you place days ahead rather than on the day.

  • Historic Richmond Town

    441 Clarke Avenue, Richmondtown

A preserved village on lanes laid out for carts, where a coach cannot turn in places a sedan can. For a wedding or a school group we check the vehicle against the entrance beforehand rather than on the day.

  • Great Kills Harbor

    Off Hylan Boulevard, Great Kills

Marinas and a park entrance off Hylan, with a long approach road and almost nowhere to stand once you are past the gate. Give us the marina by name. They are not all reached from the same turning.

  • Todt Hill

Ocean Terrace and Todt Hill Road

The highest ground in the city, and it drives like it: narrow lanes, long private drives, no pavement to speak of and very little lighting. We ask for the gate or the driveway rather than the number on the letterbox.

  • Tottenville and Conference House Park

The southern tip of New York City

The last neighbourhood on the island and further from everything than a map suggests, with the Outerbridge as its own front door. A morning flight from here starts earlier than people expect, and we say so when we quote it.

Four airports, from an island

Newark first, because from here it usually is. Give us the flight number and the pickup follows the aircraft, with 60 minutes of wait time on every arrival.

EWR

Newark Liberty International

The closest airport to most of the borough, and the counterintuitive one: the Goethals Bridge and a short run up the Turnpike, with no Manhattan and no Queens in between.

25-60 min

JFK

John F. Kennedy International

The Verrazzano and then the length of Brooklyn on the Belt Parkway. Further than Newark and far more exposed to the peak, which is why this number is a wide range.

45-90 min

LGA

LaGuardia

Over the Verrazzano and north through Brooklyn and Queens on the BQE. The expressway decides this one, not the airport.

40-85 min

TEB

Teterboro

The private-aviation field in Bergen County, reached by the Goethals or the Bayonne and then north. Worth asking about if you are flying privately.

35-75 min

Drive times are typical, not guaranteed. Traffic, weather and roadworks all move them, which is why we watch the flight instead of the clock.

Ways to book on Staten Island

Three formats cover everything we do here, and every one is quoted before you confirm.

Point to point

One Staten Island address to another, or a run over a bridge into Brooklyn, Manhattan or New Jersey.

One fixed quote for the route, confirmed before you book.

By the hour

A day that crosses and re-crosses: a viewing round, a wedding at Snug Harbor, a funeral, with the car held between stops.

Blocks of four to sixteen hours, with the car staying and waiting included.

Airport transfer

Newark Liberty, JFK, LaGuardia or Teterboro, with the flight watched and 60 minutes of wait time on every arrival.

Quoted per vehicle for the airport and the address, with the flight watched.

What we control, and what we do not

A car service that promises to beat traffic is a car service that will be late and surprised about it.

We control the car and the chauffeur

Vetted, licensed, insured and dispatched to be early. That part is entirely ours, and we will not blame a bridge for it.

We do not control the bridges

Lane closures, overnight work and an incident on a deck all arrive without notice, and on this island there is rarely a second road to take. We reroute, and we tell you before you are sitting in it.

We do not control the Expressway

One road crosses the borough and it stops. What we can do is build the pickup around the hour you are actually travelling rather than around a clear run nobody gets.

We control what you are charged

The fare is worked out before you confirm and does not move for the weather or the hour. Tolls, parking and the congestion charge are passed through at cost.

The car for a Staten Island run

A sedan covers two people and two cases. A head count, a pile of luggage, or a Todt Hill driveway a coach cannot turn in settles it long before style does.
